I am very excited to announce that NWO has granted a collaborative research proposal between my team and that of Laura van Niftrik (Radboud University). With our joined forces, we aim to detail mitochondrial development and the formation of cristae in space and time during sexual blood-stage development of the human malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum using experimental genetics, complexome profiling, and combining a variety of imaging techniques including live fluorescence microscopy and cryo-electron tomography. In this particular project, we will be focussing on the roles of two proteins of the putative mitochondrial contact site and cristae organizing system (MICOS).
